It is definitely safe to say that this holiday season is unlike any other I have ever experienced in my life! In fact, it is so completely different that I don't even realize that it is technically the "holiday season", and it doesn't feel like Christmas has already come and gone. I think most of that has to do with the fact that for me, Christmas is the cold, snowy (okay, maybe just rainy) winter. It is most definitely NOT in the sunny, hot, summer! Read more.

Hello everyone! I hope you've all had an amazing Christmas, and Happy New Year! I had an exciting two weeks of winter vacation this year in France, starting a week or so before Christmas and ending just after the New Year. It includes trips to Paris, a ski trip to Western Europe, and relaxing in Etampes with my host family. Read more.

How to Celebrate a Birthday Abroad

I actually had three birthday celebrations on the same day, which was wonderful (this was possibly because I am, among other things, wonderfully efficient). In school, my friends brought me a giant cupcake (and let me rephrase that - a GIANT cupcake - seriously, I was like, "Thank-you so much! But um, how do I eat this?") and sang. In the middle of the school. Read more.

I know when I lived in Italy as a kid, we definitely went to Pisa. We have a picture of my on my (real) dad's shoulders holding up the Tower. But, it doesn't hurt to get another one (or ten)!

The Costa Rican school year of 2011 has come to an end, and in general the 4 and a half months that I had of it were a great success for la gringa. Well not so much in the first 1-2 months when my most commonly used words/phrases were qué?, yo no entiendo, and más despacio, por favor. Although I didn't have the greatest success right off the bat, I definitely made great improvements in the classes in which I initially struggled greatly. Read more.

Icelandic is made up of hundreds of phrases that make no sense by them self literally translated, but in Icelandic apparently they make perfect sense.

Lýst vel á það - (Leesht vel ow tha(h)th)
Lit.: Described well on it.
Means: Sounds like a plan (Good idea).

Til á það (Till ow tha(h)th)
Lit.: To on it.
Means: I'm up for anything.

Þetta reddast (th-eh-tah red-ahst)
Lit: That fixed.
Means: It'll work out (eventually).
More: This is the mindset of the Icelandic people, really. They're very laidback and things will work out eventually, so don't worry. Right?

Til hamingju með daginn/afmæli (til hah-mi(n)g-you meth dah-yinn/af-mile-ee)
Lit: To happiness with the day
Means: Happy birthday!
